Coche is our most exclusive white wine, which enhances every expression of the vineyard and the region. They come from old vines, planted in mica schist soils over 600 meters, where the Rabigato, Viosinho and Códega do Larinho varieties predominate. The key to the success of this wine is its origin: the vine. Here, the balance between acidity and volume results in a fresh wine with enormous aging potential.
2018 was a fresh year until August, with the coolest July in the history of the sec. XXI. The maturation of the vine showed a delay of about 3 weeks compared to 2017. In the first days of August there was a strong rise in temperature: August 4th was the hottest day of the 21st century (to date), having the maturation of the grapes continued slowly during the month of September. Due to the imposed water stress, the plants originated musts with little alcohol content and good phenolic maturation, with a lot of complexity and minerality. The white grape harvest started on September 5th and ended on October 2nd.
After a selection of the grapes in the vineyard, they were transported in boxes of 25 kg in a refrigerated truck. At the cellar entrance, a second sorting was done. During the night, the grapes were gently pressed and the must was decanted for about 48 hours. The alcoholic fermentation took place in French oak barrels, 228L and 550L, 50% new barrels.
During the 12 months of aging in barrel, Coche partially did the malolactic fermentation.
Coche 2018 highlights the wine year 2018 quite well - fresh, light, elegant and persistent. Aromatically balanced, with some barrel notes well integrated in a granitic mineral profile combined with citrus notes and white spices. In the mouth it is deep, fresh, with good structure without weighing, very precise, with a complex and slightly salty finish. Decanting advisable.
