The wine year of 2016 was a very complex year due to adverse weather conditions. The winter was extremely generous in the amount of precipitation, reaching levels well above the average of the last 30 years and temperatures above normal until the end of January.
The beginning of spring continued to be rainy, but temperatures dropped considerably, thus slowing the development of the vineyards. However, July and August were extremely hot and dry months: the vines had a lush appearance and in general a great leaf area, the result of the excellent water reserves resulting from the rainy winter. During this period, the grapes matured slowly. However, on the 24th and 25th of August it rained at Quinta do Crasto 18mm, a rain very grateful for the vines, which together with the decrease in temperature at the beginning of September, caused a perfect ripening of the grapes.
We started harvesting white grapes on the 2nd of September, and the first red grapes started on the 5th of September. The climatic conditions during the harvest continued to be very favorable to the correct maturation of the grape, which allowed us to select precisely the correct harvest time for each vineyard or variety in particular. As a result we have white, red and port wines that show excellent colors, great aromatic projection, and serious structures, with great balance and elegance. A vintage that, due to its complexity, forced the oenology and viticulture teams to spend a lot of time in the vineyard to make the most important decisions that originated great wines.
The grapes, from the best plots of Touriga Franca at Quinta do Crasto, were transported in boxes of 22 kg capacity and subjected to rigorous sorting at the entrance to the cellar. After a complete destemming and a slight crushing, the must was transferred to fermentation vats in stainless steel with controlled temperature. At the end of the alcoholic fermentation, a soft pressing was carried out.
Quinta do Crasto Touriga Franca 2016 aged in French oak barrels where it remained for 18 months.
It has a deep violet color. On the nose, it impresses with its intensity and concentration of red fruit aromas in perfect harmony with soft floral notes. In the mouth tasting, it presents an intense start, evolving into a wine with an elegant profile, with excellent volume in the mouth and silky texture tannins, all very well integrated with red fruit notes. It ends in perfect balance, with an extraordinary persistence and full of freshness. A wine that perfectly reflects the identity of the grape variety.
