The Museu dos Lagares 2018 is the wine that, following Turris, places Niepoort in the world panorama of the great red wines that are made in the vineyard.
This Single Vineyard reflects the true essence of the Douro, the multidimensional complexity of old vines, with a genetic heritage of more than 30 different varieties, interpreted with elegance, freshness, sophistication and simplicity.
We dare to say that this is a “Grand Cru” from the Douro: pure, precise and delicate.
The 2018 harvest will be remembered for the lowest productivity in the Museu dos Lagares vineyard on record. The harvest began in the first week of September. The winemaking philosophy of this unique parcel was to convey the expression of the elegance and delicacy of the vine in the wine and thus the winemaking operations were always minimalist, using only whole bunches with light foot treading in traditional stone presses and a brief period of maceration before completing the alcoholic fermentation. Malolactic fermentation took place in French oak barrels, in which the wine aged for 15 months, before bottling.
In 2018, the rainy winter, the dry spring when budding, and the hot summer provided the ideal conditions for this “world class wine”. The nose is marked by notes of black cherry and tobacco, a slight smoky character, spices and herbs. Structure is the definition of elegance. In the mouth it is fresh, round, with a dry, spicy, long and persistent aftertaste.
