Charme is a rare wine from the Douro. Its elegance and complexity, its soft and enveloping tannins, are a unique way of expressing the old, cooler and more sheltered vines of Vale de Mendiz, in the middle of the Pinhão valley.
Dirk Niepoort has in Charme his last interpretation and denounced passion for the Burgundy region.
A signature wine, a unique wine. Charme is the only tranquil wine produced in the Vale de Mendiz cellar, in round granite mills.
The 2018 harvest will be remembered for the lowest productivity of the vine recorded and for the atypical climatic conditions. Winter was cold and dry, while spring and early summer were very wet and relatively cold, which resulted in a delay in the vegetative cycle, as well as problems with mildew in this region. In addition to these challenges, there was a strong hailstorm in late May and a heat wave in the last days of July.
The month of August was hot, with hot and dry weather throughout the harvest period, which started in Vale de Mendiz on 6 September. A few small batches of wine were produced for the Charme in the early stages of the harvest, using only whole bunches with treading on foot in traditional stone mills. After a brief period of maceration, the alcoholic and malolactic fermentations ended in French oak barrels, in which the wine aged for 15 months, before bottling.
Charme 2018 displays a brilliant clear ruby appearance, with very delicate aromas of cherry and raspberry, along with elegant earthy notes of forest soil and hints of tea leaves. In the mouth it is refined and intense, with a magnificent freshness and an extremely elegant structure with velvety tannins. With only 10% new oak in the final blend, the subtle structure provided by the wood blends in perfectly with the freshness promoted by the fruit and acidity.
